Bluffing is way of deceiving your opponents making them think that you have a good hand than theirs. This is a technique that can be used effectively to steal pots and increase your bankroll favorably. Bluffing is a strategy that can be implemented during game play most often only if you are a professional player. At most times, if you bluff too often, your opponents will label you a loose player.

In holdem poker, there are two ways in which a player can bluff during game play - to increase the pot size or to steal the pot.

Bluffing to increase the pot size is one effective way of making money playing online poker. Suppose you started off with a hand that developed to a straight or a flush on the flop, you can act in a way that you deceive your opponents making them think that your hand is weak.

During the flop, you can simply play a game of check or call, and if one of your opponets makes a re-raise you should not counter attack. Make the opponent thing that s/he has the good hand. By increasing the pot size, you should always be in the game, but play calm by not re-raising. As the betting intervals progress and you check the behavior of call action done by your opponents, you can now start to raise or re-raise. Your other opponents will think that maybe you have developed a two pair and they will bet aggressively because they had studied you previous call action. This is the time you can counter attack given that you have a high hand such as a high straight, flush or full house. Do not bet too aggressively if you are holding a low straight.

Bluffing to steal the pot is a technique that is used by most online poker players especially new players. These players will bet aggressively even if they are holding a weak hand so as to force other players to fold their hand. This technique is often done by loose players and it never pays off at times. With this technique, it should not be repeated too often because your opponents will start to doubt your playing skills if you always reach the showdown.

In order to employ bluffing effectively during game play, you first have to analyze the type of players you are playing with. If the players are loose, then bluffing will be effective but if you are playing with pros, the only bluffing technique applicable is to increase the pot size. Bluffing does not work well when playing with pros.
